What does it mean to truly know oneself? To be able to look within and examine our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs?

This is the dilemma of the examined self — the process of self-reflection and understanding that allows us to gain insight into our own lives.

Examining your self, also known as self-reflection or introspection, is looking inward and gaining insight into your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

Diane Von Furstenberg was right when she said, “The most important relationship in your life is the relationship you have with yourself.”

Examining the self is a journey of discovery and transformation, learning and unlearning, and growth and understanding.

It is about taking the time to pause and reflect on who we are, what we believe in, our values and what we want from our lives. It is about being honest with ourselves and exploring our motivations and values.

It also means you have experienced criticism, judgment, or scrutiny from others. You have been able to look at yourself objectively and see where improvements can be made.

“In our personal lives, if we do not develop our own self-awareness and become responsible for first creations, we empower other people and circumstances to shape our lives by default,” Stephen Covey said.

Many great thinkers, including Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, have explored the examined self throughout history.
