周克吾谷:“有时说的越清楚,表达就越苍白”

库艺术=库:您的绘画创作游走在表现和抽象之间,自由而肆意。其实在中国现代绘画史上,很多人都是从具象绘画的方向开始和转化的,您是否也经历过类似的转化过程?

周克吾谷=周:我最早学油画,那个年代更注重对扎实基础的训练,那时所学的素描、色彩是比较刻板的,不自如、不痛快。为了逃脱这种痕迹和束缚,我有段时间不再画油画,而转向了水墨。对于水墨,我没有任何基础,正因为这种陌生感,反而能做的更纯粹,这其实是个好事。后来我回看中国传统绘画的经典之作,一度感动于古人所达到的高度,但临摹一段时间之后,还是感觉不痛快;我是一个比较反叛的人,虽然我从传统中走来,但我认为传统的东西够用即可。艺术是很个性化的东西,它源于人的天性。

库:当您面对一张空白的画布时,怎样将自己的所思所想,投注其上?

周:我生活、睡觉、吃饭都在工作室里,一般画画都在晚上。每当晚上关了灯以后,我的脑子里就会浮现出很多东西,然后我会打开灯马上去画,皆尽可能地将自己的感受投注到画面中。我在画第一笔的时候,是没有知觉的,然后跟随自己的潜意识不断在画面中寻找元素,在不知不觉中形成画面关系。绘画和个人的修养息息相关,这与你平时对社会的认知,读书、音乐等联系密切。不论当代还是传统,绘画都有自己独特的语言和内涵,它不需要文字来说明。你将自己的所思所想表现出来,这个画面就是你的语言。

曾有朋友邀请我去葡萄园写生,我说我已经不在乎写生与否,因为我天天在脑子里写生;我写生的不是现实物象,而是源于多年来我对绘画的概念、图示和方法的领悟,并将脑海中的这些幻象表现在画布上。很多艺术家对于自己要表达的东西不一定能够说清楚,有时当你说的越清楚,你的表达就会越苍白。

库:在您的画面中,使用到很多现成品材料,请您谈谈它们有何特殊意义?

周:我认为材料比较好玩。以前我在画丙烯或油画作品时,总感觉太过于平面,后来加入一些其它材料后,则产生更强的力量感;除此之外,还有一些我也说不清楚的理由。我不会故意去寻找需要的现成品材料,而多是选择我用过的。当它们出现在我的画面里时我觉得非常有意思。对于我作品中出现的材料,它的涵义也因不同的观看产生出不同的解读。

无论油画还是水墨,在很多人看来都是了不得的表达方式;但在我看来,艺术家所想表达的内容是可以尽情发挥的,油画或水墨都是一种材料而已,我在画面上运用一些对我而言非常独特且不能更换的材料,这似乎更有意思,更好玩,让我更有成就感。另外,对不同材质的把握也需要一段时间的训练,只有把它运用到最熟练时,才能做出最好的东西。

库:您的作品似乎没有具体的个人图示,更多是一种随机、未完成性的语言?

周:我在绘画中不断去寻找淋漓尽致地表达和感动,我会使用各种材料。我认为艺术是要去做的,但是很多人往往太过于强调绘画性。毕加索也用很多现成品来创作,比如用箩筐做的羊,我认为就非常自然、真实,不造作。同时,他有些画也是未完成的,画了一半就不画了。在追求艺术活灵活现地表现时,一些未完成痕迹的出现也是正常的。有时绘画和讲话一样,需要给别人留一些想象的空间,不能把话全说完;一件作品如果把什么都表达完了,我认为这是失败的。

库:您的画面看似很随意,但它非常地成立。

周:艺术要在自然而然的状态中产生,千万不能造作,一造作就降低了品格。好的作品都源于长期对绘画的认知与思考,我也在长期的创作中形成了自己对绘画的价值观。面对自然风景时,如果你没有高超的技巧,是表现不出它的神髓的;有些东西千万不要动它,你可以通过脑子将它转换成为另一种方式,这非常抽象,就如同音乐家作曲,他从自然中进行提炼。画画一定要快乐,没有快乐就画不好画,所以我的创作过程更像是“玩”的状态。很多人喜欢在艺术中加入政治,但艺术就是艺术,政治就是政治。艺术应该是单纯和干净的,好的作品都是干净的东西。

库:您认为在抽象绘画之后,如何让绘画重新变得具有意义?

周:抽象更接近于哲理,它包涵了对人的思考,在说明某一种问题。从古至今,一个真正的艺术家都是在不停地思考问题,而不是只把一种模式做好。如果你对艺术的思想和概念不变,就容易流于老套,所以我现在更注重的是——通过不断地思考,来更新自己对绘画的认知。

库:绘画在当下的全新语境中,应该如何定义?您认为现在绘画可以承载什么?

周:我觉得绘画什么都承载不了,绘画现在是非常个人性的。艺术家的力量太小了,不要指望他能做什么,但艺术家必须要存在,不然我们的社会将不是完整的社会。艺术家呈现的作品,必定带有自己的担当,他把自己的意识形态以及他对艺术的认知表现出来,至于这些最后有什么用,谁也不知道。

我的自述 对于绘画来说真的是一个非常有意思的问题,不用去验血,一查就能知道自己缺什么,而同时当你开始准备工作的时候,在画布与色彩之间形成鲜明的反差的不同程度中,你便知道你内心深处想要说什么的时候到了。找野花吃野味的意义,无非就是,看不一样的面部表情,听不一样的叫床声音,体验不一样的激情,睡不一样的身姿,享受不一样的灵魂,感受不一样的快活。美人不同,味道不同,自由狂欢,虽死无憾。这大概就是我在绘画中的个人体验,非要把我用过的杂物放置在画面里,寻找一种美妙的快感……这是没有做过体验的人无法感悟到的。运用一些破坏的技法,来开始另一种绘画形式的尝试。我不满足于写实形象的绘制,总是在努力尝试,寻找一种既区别于其它画派风格语言,又能在传统绘画中找到突破的那么一种绘画形式。我在宣纸和亚麻面料之间来回转换,以示我对艺术划分的质疑。我的纸本作品约占全部作品的一半,但若把我的布面作品与纸本作品割裂开,则将有损对我绘画整体创作的全面理解。我的这段话阐述了我对具象绘画和非具象绘画的理解:这个把自己打扮成一个归国华侨法国艺术家你画的画还是挺不错的,好吧,就是一点儿乱。稍微带色情。一个中间由你拿着压抑,透露出一种狂躁。还有一个可看性,所以我邀请你参加做一个反面教材。我瞧不起你对不对。你是个狗屁呀,你什么都没有。我蛮享受一个人对我的这段批评。

我必须找到一种方法,马上就能既快速又无拘无束地作画。作品要是能看上去不怎幺差,那就让我挺快乐的,有时能快乐一整天。

有时候对绘画作品的谈论,不仅很难表达,甚至毫无意义。你只能用现有能表达的词汇来表达,再通过语言来传达,而绘画通常跟这些是两码事。

绘画是思维的又一种形式,通常我对绘画所感兴趣的是内容与方法,而不是去理解我所不理解的。这适用于每一幅画。

Personal Statement

It's really interesting for painting that you don't have to take a blood test and you will know what you're missing. While you are preparing for starting to work, the time comes when you are aware of what you want to express in your deep heart with the different degrees of contrast between canvas and color.

The meaning of looking for wild flowers and venison is nothing but to look at different facial expressions,hear another sexual moans, enjoy different souls, and feel different joys. Different beauties with different styles, the feeling of freedom makes one’s life with no regrets.

These are my personal experience in painting. I use destructive techniques to try other painting styles. Rather than being a realist, I choose to try hard to find another painting style and expression which can distinguish itself from others and that is a new breakthrough from traditional forms. I switched back and forth between Xuan paper and flax fabric to show my doubts about the art division. In all of my works, 50% are paper works. The separation of cloth and paper works would undermine my overall understanding of painting. The following passage illustrates my understanding between figurative painting and non-figurative painting:

An artist who dressed himself up as an overseas Chinese in France,his works are pretty good, although they are a little messy and pornographic, he added. Because of mania and depression as well as salacity in the works, I invited you to take them as negative study materials. I despise you because you have nothing. Actually, I enjoyed this criticism about me.

I need to find a way that I can draw a picture freely and fast. If the work doesn’t seem too bad, I can be a happy man all day.

Sometimes it’s too hard to express painting works; also you will find that’s meaningless. You can only express your thoughts by using available vocabulary, and then use the language to convey them. However, it has nothing to do with painting.

Painting is another form of thoughts, what I am interested is content and method, not to understand what I don’t understand, and this works for each painting.

I live, sleep and eat in the studio. In the evening, when the lights are off, a lot of inspiration emerged and I will draw it down quickly with all my feelings and passion. But in the first stroke,I have no perceptions. And by following my sub-consciousness to keep looking for elements, the painting is formed as a natural result. Painting is closely related to personal taste and it also connects to your individual cognition about society, reading and music.

No matter its contemporary or traditional, painting has its unique language and connotation beyond words. You show what you think to form your language without explanation. Great artists should have a comfortable life, wealth and security. Besides, making a lot of money, living longer, and fuck as many women as you like. While being moderate in alcohol. Painting is a long and endless road, so I never stop painting. It takes a long time to figure out how to make disordered emotions come true, and that’s a problem will never be solved…

面对独裁专制,所坚持的立场,没有灰色地带。没有两头通吃的人!既保持着艺术的先锋性和学朮性,又能和所谓体制勾勾搭搭。其实就是一个还没找着家的野狗,在城市边上的垃圾堆里捡了一个大盖帽戴上,感觉能和体制对话,谈学朮了。

因为我怀疑自己对抽象艺术的疑虑是相当典型的,从而我的讨论足以超越个人经验。那种唯恐错投阵营的担心,在一定情况下也许会得到尊重,但在艺术中,正如我想说明的那样,这种担心可能是灾难性的。它会威胁到艺术,把艺术贬低到仅仅是(对某一阵营)忠诚的标志。

Joke Valley: My creative process is more like a "playing" state.

Your painting creation moves between performance and abstraction, free and cozy. In fact, in the history of modern Chinese painting, many people started and transformed from the direction of figurative painting. Have you experienced a similar transformation process?

I studied oil painting for a long time. At that time, I paid more attention to the training of a solid foundation. The sketches and colors I learned were rather rigid and uncomfortable. In order to escape this trace and bondage, I have not painted oil painting for a while, and turned to ink. I don't have any foundation for ink painting. It is because the sense of strange that it can be done more purely. This is actually a good thing. Later, I went back to see the classic of traditional Chinese painting. I was touched by the heights that the ancients reached, but after a while, I still felt unhappy; I am a relatively rebellious person, although I am coming from the tradition, I also believe that traditional things are enough. Art is a very personal thing, it stems from human nature.

When you face a blank canvas, how do you put your own thoughts on it?

Joke: I live, sleep, and eat in the studio, and usually paint at night. Every time I turn off the lights at night, a lot of things will appear in my mind, and then I will turn on the lights immediately and go to paint, and I will put my feelings into the picture as much as possible. When I was painting the first stroke, I was unaware, and then I followed my subconscious mind to look for elements in the picture constantly, and formed a picture relationship unconsciously. Painting and personal cultivation are closely related, which is also related to your usual knowledge of society, reading, music and so on. Whether it is contemporary or traditional, painting has its own unique language and connotation, it does not need words to explain. You show what you think and the picture is your language.

At one time,a friend invited me to go to the vineyard to sketch. I said that I don't care about writing anymore, because I sketch in my mind every day; what I sketched was not a realistic thing,it was originated from my concept of painting, illustration and method of painting for many years. Then I comprehend and express these illusions on the canvas. Many artists are not necessarily clear about what they want to express, and sometimes the more clear you say, the paler your expression will be.

Library: In your picture, using a lot of ready-made materials, please talk about their special significance?

Joke: I think the material is more interesting. When I was painting acrylic or oil paintings, I always felt too flat. Later, after adding some other materials, it will become more stronger. In addition, there are some reasons I can't express clearly. I don't deliberately to look for the ready-made materials I need, but I choose the ones I have used. I find it is very interesting when they appear in my picture. For the material that appears in my work, its meaning also produces different interpretations for different views.

Regardless of the oil painting or ink painting, it is a good expression for many people; but in my opinion, the content that the artist wants to express can be fully exerted,the oil painting or ink painting is only a material. It is interesting to use some materials which can't be replaced is also special to me. Meanwhile, it seems more interesting, more fun, and makes me more fulfilling. In addition, the grasp of different materials also requires a period of training, only when it is applied to the most skilled, it will make the best things.

Library: why does your work seem to have a specific personal icon and more is a random, incomplete language?

Joke: I am constantly looking for the expression and touching in the painting, I will use a variety of materials. I think art is of great importance to be done, but many people tend to emphasize painting too much. Picasso also uses a lot of ready-made products to create, such as sheep made with baskets, I think it is very natural, and without any artificial elements. At the same time, some of his paintings are also unfinished, and he will not draw if he draws half of it. In the pursuit of artistic live performance, the appearance of some unfinished traces is also normal. Sometimes painting and speech are the same, you need to leave some room for imagination, and you can't finish the whole words. If a piece of work finishes everything, I think it is a failure.
