The Poetry Things
By Bai Hua
I. Eastward poetry
If no pessimism, where there nothingness will be? He refused to bathe.
But the Japanese people are bathing freaks
The more a person wins, the more useless it looks.
So everlasting as bonsai, transient as sakura
To be caught in a deadlock and getting thinner? First idea Motherland
indeed, we prefer another wording---so-called "marvellous"
II. Westward poetry
"Give me (Whitman) life coarse and rank...
I pick out some low person for my dearest friend..."
The Iron Age! J. M. Coetzee! South Africa!
"..old woman's scalp, pink, babyish."
Someone is unlooked-for here, but a treasure elsewhere.
Judith Herzberg, a Dutch poet, was asked to choose occupation,
she said, okay, she'd like to be a disabled.
